Why Delays?

Making a Bad Situation Worse

Right now, the air traffic control system faces potentially serious and dangerous issues of understaffing and outdated equipment. Air traffic is increasing to record levels, but already there are 1,000 fewer controllers than there were just two years ago1, yet the FAA hired a mere 13 controllers in 20042. Meanwhile, the FAA has been slowing, cutting or derailing critical programs to modernize controller equipment. Fewer controllers, more outdated equipment, and record-breaking traffic do not mix. The combination is seriously impacting passenger safety, interrupting travel plans, and wasting taxpayer dollars.
